Music is the ultimate form of expression and communication because it can transcend all social boundaries – it can be easily felt and understood by all. In fact, I see music as the great equalizer. It puts us all on the same playing field and, for a moment, we forget our differences though common emotional experiences. It never ceases to amaze me how a collection of notes can evoke powerful emotions in us all. There’s something about it that is deeply rooted in the human condition. I suppose that I’ve always been drawn to music for that very reason. Being painfully introverted, I found very early in life that I was best able to connect with others through music. And, that it’s one of the cheapest (and most effective) forms of therapy there is.
While listening to music has always been (and will always be) my primary coping mechanism, I admit that I tried to quit creating music for a period of time. For a number of poorly thought-out reasons, I thought that I should focus all my efforts on my career. Looking back, I was definitely trying to fill with other things a gaping hole in my heart and soul once filled with musical expression. I am so grateful to have come to that realization and to have regained what I foolishly tried to forget.
A Floor Below marks my re-entry back into the world of musical expression, which has allowed me to reconnect myself. Our music definitely explores the darker (too often ignored) side of the human condition so that it can be brought to light and embraced. I truly hope that something we’ve created here helps you to cope with the world, and maybe helps you find yourself in the process.
Thank you to my wife and son for always believing in me. You will never know just how much you both mean to me!
